When Beauty scents with love her bait,
What artful secrets meet their fate;
What things we darkly hide with care,
Leap out before we are aware.
Thinking of girls in flesh and blood,
And not of any shadowy brood -
What poor tame sport will Beauty find
When I confess to her my mind.
When I shall tell of girls whose looks
Came out of painted cloth or books,
Then Beauty, erstwhile full of thought.
Must laugh when such poor things are caught.
