To dziecko takie małe, to dziecko takie chore,
To biedne dziecko umrze na pewno dziś wieczorem.

Lekarstwa napoczęte bezużytecznie stoją,
I chore dziecko rzęzi maleńką śmiercią swoją.

Za oknem zima skrzypi i kaszle wiatr na dworze,
Już nic biednemu dziecku na ziemi nie pomoże.

Śnieg pada bezszelestnie, zwyczajnie i powszednio,
Śmierć brodzi po pokoju i świece gasną przed nią.

Przy łóżku siedzi matka i cała trwa w podziwie;
Nie czuje nic, nie widzi, uśmiecha się leniwie...

Pogasły świece. Dnieje. Śnieg wisi na błękicie,
I w śniegu tym stopniało maleńkie, biedne życie;

Aż matka się zdziwiła, że stało się tak biało,
Że stało się tak śnieżnie, gdy dziecko umierało.
