XXII
"As well as in our tongue we can convey"
As well as in our tongue we can convey
Another tongue; as readily as Nature
Can be revealed in art; or portraiture
Our own face, true to life, can yet portray,
So, even more skilfully, you display
With the pen, in learned literature,
The grace, the manner, bearing and stature,
Of him who wrote of Aeneas, in his day.
That same candour, that grace divine,
That same sweetness and majestic line,
Seen in your Virgil, that self-same grandeur,
French renders, by your heavenly power.
Des Masures, it is, no Caesar at this hour
Or Maecenas, who does those virtues honour.
