My wonder is the great bright sun,
Beneath whose looks we live and die;
Whose strong bright arm of light can lift
The water into the Heavens high;
I marvel too at beauty's power
In flesh and rock, in tree and flower.
And yet, in spite of these fine things,
I have no hope in life to come -
Save that my spirit, like my flesh,
Will find in common grass a home;
I have no hope of life at last
Outshining this when it is past.
Love, only Love, can change my mind;
I for that passion great will claim
Immunity from time and space,
From floods of water and of flame;
A perfect immortality
Must qualify that love in me.
