EnglishTuphium (Τούφιον Ptolemy IV. 5, 32, M .: εἰς Τούφιον on the mummy locations of a Theban [Diopolites] Preisigke S.-B. 3579), place in Upper Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile, south of Thebes. Daressy Annal. du Serv. XIX 243 under T. aligns with the first victory in the inscription of Corn. Gallus as a place called, later as a place of the Roman garrison camp (παρεμβολή) known as Ophieion (Lesquier L'armée rom. d'Egypte 410 and Art. Thebai No. 2 p 1557f.) near the present-day Luxor. This is obviously incorrect. In contrast, and already advocated by D'Anville, among others, equate with today's El Tûd (Tôd) 23 kms south of Luxor (Egypt. Djerut) today pretty generally recognized Maspero Mém. Mission. fr. au Caire I 181f. Legrain Bullet. inst. fr. Archeol. or. XII 106. Gauthier Dict. géogr. VI 130f. Baedeker Ägyptens8 346. In El Tûd there was a famous temple of the Theban local god Montu and his bull; French excavations since 1934 with notable finds from the Middle Kingdom, Preview: Bisson de la Roque Tôd 1934-1936 = Fouilles de l'inst. fr. archéol. or. FrançaisTuphium (Τούφιον Ptolémée IV 5, 32, M:..
