Thy father was a drunken man,
He threatened thee with a sharp knife;
And thou, a child not ten years old,
Lay trembling for thy life.
Lay trembling in the dark all night,
Sleep could not seal thine eye or ear;
Thy hair, which was a dark rich brown,
Is now made grey by fear.
