The Thieves
written by William Henry Davies
Nature Poems (1908) Link to further information

Thieves, Death and Absence, come
No more to my heart's home:
Behold my chambers bare,
I make no thing my care.

As fast as I aught bring
In place of stolen thing,
One of ye two doth come
Again to my heart's home.

Henceforth I'll leave it bare,
Cold winds shall enter there;
For nothing keep I can -
Of plant, or beast, or man.
