Planning to import images affected by the URAA
Hello,
What is the status of your project? Regards, Yann 00:47, 10 October 2012 (EDT)
There is need a bot
Hi! You have made a big mess on Special:RecentChanges. Why don't you register a bot account? For a bot flag you can ask Eclecticology. Regards Electron ツ ➧☎ 17:20, 12 January 2013 (EST)
- Okay, I've created User:Transfer from Wikimedia Commons bot and left User:Eclecticology a message, and switched the bot to using that account. However I'm not going to be able to suspend uploads until the bot is approved, because that will probably take a very long time and this is a somewhat urgent matter. Dcoetzee 17:23, 12 January 2013 (EST)
- This is rather a small project so it wan't take a long time, I suppose. But if it is urgent, of course you can upload without the bot flag... Electron ツ ➧☎ 17:40, 12 January 2013 (EST)
- Sorry for the spam, I'll try to at least keep it to the uploads and not too many small fixes. Dcoetzee 17:47, 12 January 2013 (EST)

URAA material
There is a big problem with adding all this material. It’s looking like a big data dump. While I have no problem with the underlying copyright rationale, there are problems with categorization and with undocumented templates. Many of these have no topical categories, or categories that are so obscure that nobody will ever find them. Some categories may have worked well in Commons in an established category tree, but that doesn’t work here. This project started as a Wikisource spinoff, not a Commons spinoff; we do not have anyone with the experience or desire to curate any significant amount of this material. I would suggest holding off until these matters can be properly addressed. Eclecticology 06:53, 14 January 2013 (EST)
- I can help with curation - e.g. I can import the categories and the documentation for the templates from Commons, and in cases where categories are too specific they can be migrated to parent categories and I can take care of that as well. I believe Yann will help also, being a Commons admin. I did some recruiting on Commons too. I'm not going to upload such a large number of files in the future all at once - the files uploaded so far represented a backlog of many months of affected files. So there will be plenty of time to curate and integrate new files. Dcoetzee 08:17, 14 January 2013 (EST)
Material which is unfree in the source country
Do you know what Wikilivres policies say about material which is not in the public domain in the source country? For example, there is Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Eliseu Meifrèn with files by a Spanish artist who died less than 80 years ago, but the paintings are in the public domain in Canada since the painter died more than 50 years ago. --Stefan2 10:07, 17 January 2013 (EST)
- Hi Stefan, I presume these works are accepted because Main Page states "This site [...] follows Canadian copyright law" and {{PD-Canada-l}} states "This work is in the public domain in Canada, but may still be copyrighted in the USA and some countries in Europe. It is the responsibility of the user to determine whether the works are in the public domain in his or her respective country." (this template is the default template for {{PD-Art}} and pretty widely used). Dcoetzee 10:21, 17 January 2013 (EST)
- That sounds good. Is there some template or category for deletion requests on Commons that I can use to suggest that you upload the files in the deletion request to this website? I might make some more URAA-related deletion requests during the next few days. --Stefan2 11:03, 17 January 2013 (EST)
- Not yet but I should've thought of that. :-) Please just create one in a suitable place and let me know what it is. Dcoetzee 11:05, 17 January 2013 (EST)
- I see that you created Commons:Category:Deleted files transferred to Wikilivres/pending. Can that be used for images which may be suitable for Wikilivres? --Stefan2 16:40, 26 January 2013 (EST)
- Yes, please do! Dcoetzee 19:17, 26 January 2013 (EST)

Naming files.
I’m wondering about what convention should be preferred for naming these art files that are being imported. Some have painter title with or without punctuation between them. Others reverse the two. Still others have only the title. Do you have any thoughts on this? Eclecticology 23:55, 23 January 2013 (EST)
- For files imported from Commons I keep the original filename (otherwise it'd be very difficult for people to find, unless I used a redirect or something). For new files like some of the Google Art Project uploads I'll use a consistent naming scheme. Dcoetzee 15:27, 24 January 2013 (EST)
For this image, can you recover an older version of the page from Commons, prior to the vandalism of 9/3/12? Thanks, Cmadler 11:33, 24 January 2013 (EST)
- Woops, done. I'll modify the bot to check for very short descriptions. Dcoetzee 15:23, 24 January 2013 (EST)
À la recherche du temps perdu
I have some items from Commons that are either URAA covered or registered with formalities under U. S. law.
Before I nominate them for removal, I was wondering if you could assist the migration of uploading these, the last three volumes of this work by Marcel Proust in the original French, to Wikilivres. They are in five books with a combined size of less than 55 megabytes. They are all match and split jobs with good quality texts from the Bibliothèque Électronique de Québec. The third book also has 84 pages of validated texts. They are Gallimard texts which still have copyright in the U.S. until 2018, 2020 and 2022. ResScholar 19:20, 27 January 2013 (EST)
- I'm happy to assist in migrating the files with my bot, but I would greatly appreciate your help in correctly categorizing them after they're transferred, as I'm not very familiar with book-related categories here. Dcoetzee 21:14, 27 January 2013 (EST)
- Thank you very much. Adding categories will not be a problem for me. I will go make the nominations. ResScholar 13:48, 29 January 2013 (EST)
- Okay, please just add [[Category:Deleted_files_transferred_to_Wikilivres/pending]] to the deletion request and I'll transfer them after deletion. Dcoetzee 20:20, 2 February 2013 (EST)
- Thank you very much. Adding categories will not be a problem for me. I will go make the nominations. ResScholar 13:48, 29 January 2013 (EST)
Admin
Hello,
I have given you the admin right, so that we don't have to patrol your edits. ;o) Yann 03:09, 6 February 2013 (EST)
