Categories

Hi, Thank for your help, but I don’t think categories like « Category:Of Time and the River ~ A Legend of Man’s Hunger in His Youth -- by Thomas Wolfe » are very useful. The titles you choose are too long and confusing and absolutely not helpful for consulting a category like Category:Thomas Wolfe. Marc 10:47, 24 March 2012 (EDT)

Hello, I think you can shorten it a bit. No need to mention the author. The year of publication can be used to differentiate between different editions, or between different works with the same title. Category:Of Time and the River. A Legend of Man’s Hunger in His Youth would do. Also I would avoid special character like ~ in category names. Yann 05:54, 8 April 2012 (EDT)

Deletions

I don't know why those category pages were deleted, though the criticism that they were long-winded makes sense. The ownership of the site should be changing soon to Canadian ownership, and many rules will need to be reviewed to conform with that. I understand you are in Canada. Where? Eclecticology 23:57, 7 May 2012 (EDT)

People by name

I deleted this category because it is totally useless. Everybody has a name, whether or not they are authors. Category:Authors will be far more effective for accomplishing what you seem to want. Eclecticology 01:27, 29 March 2014 (PDT)

I think it would be preferable not to include the author's name as a part of the title unless there is a real need for disambiguaton. Do you have a more specific source for this work than "found online"? Eclecticology 02:25, 7 April 2014 (PDT)

hello again;

i have no objection, if you want to change it. both of the sites i found copies of this .pdf on had its title with his name included, & i think it's fair to say that after 'brave new world', most people today would be hard-pressed to name (or recognize) any other works by huxley, going just by their titles.

as re: sources.

in this case, i found the same .pdf floating around on more than one site, but my main concern is this:

while it is perfectly legal for us to host these texts in canada, as huxley's work is now pd here, the sites where i find the materials may or may not be in compliance with their own local-national copyright laws; & i really don't want to reward some person's efforts in providing the files, with possible future legal grief. i'd rather just leave them in safe & peaceful obscurity.

(also, i expect to find some future texts via fileshare & i'm not even sure how to annotate for that?)

does it matter?

as long as the file is a "pure" copy of a pubic domain (in canada) text, we don't have any legal requirements to provide "sourcing" info. i do understand the desire to be tidy, informative, & complete; but providing source info is only necessary for (many/most) open-source licenses, not public domain materials, & i'm really only uploading pd stuff here.

(if/when i do upload anything that's os licensed, i will make sure to provide the proper attributions, of course)

if you were personally curious, about where i'm finding stuff, it's just google search + dedication. i find random websites that happen to have a copy of whatever text i'm looking for at the time. if they have more than 1 text that i want, i'll probably grab them all @ the same time, & once i've found a text, i don't usually have any reason to visit the same site again, or to keep track of where it's from; all i really care about is finding the digitised texts..

if i ever do happen to find a site with a real "trove" of usable texts, i'll bookmark it, & i could send you a link if you like; but as i said above, if the site is not in canada, & they are possibly being "naughty" about copyright, i don't really want to "out" them publicly.

*tangentially: the chronicles of narnia .pdf still needs to have that one lone image removed (i think?), as per the filepage notes.

i don't think it's a real problem (or i wouldn't have uploaded the file); it's just one single low-res bookcover image, & probably legitimately "fair use", but we should still get rid of the pic asap. if someone wants to tidy up the internal organization of the pdf as well, even better.

i can't do pdf editing myself (or i would have); no software & little experience at it.

there must be somebody in the crew of regular users here who can?

should have another pd-in-ca item to upload again soon, i'm trying to space it out to about one per week or so.

hope things are well with you.

best regards (& if you are in quebec, happy election day!),

by-the-way, meant to ask, as a matter of policy: for items that are hosted as public domain @ other reasonably reliable "free book" sites, like (but not limited to) the gutenberg projects (.ca, .au, etc.), do we want to have a local copy, or just provide the cross-links?
i ask, because i've found some works of lewis & orwell that we haven't got here, & i'd expect to find more (by various authors) over time. so far, i've just been cross-linking with them; but if we wanted to, we could "move" them all here. Lx 121 04:49, 7 April 2014 (PDT)
Thank you for replying. I think that entering a dialogue on these questions is important for avoiding future misunderstanding. I am in BC, but am certainly be paying attention to Quebec's election.
I am a minimalist in regards to article titles in that I would include no more than necessary. Even for The Chronicles of Narnia the word "complete" is a redundancy. I agree that most people know very little about Huxley's work beyond Brave New World, but people who are truly interested in them should be able to find the information on the author page. Library catalogs treat author and title as distinct elements for entry. Electronic media need to adapt to their circumstances and disambiguation requirements, but even there I still believe in keeping titles to a minimum.
As for sourcing, I think the important point here is one of having a reasonable certainty that we are hosting an accurate text that can be traced to a printed version. I think that you understand the basics of Canadian copyright law as well as I do, so I'm not worried on that point. There are places where I would apply a more refined interpretation of these laws, but the effect would be more likely to expand than restrict our contents. I wouldn't treat the lack of sourcing alone as a general excuse for deleting material, but readers should be made aware that we are not vouching for the accuracy of the text. I do agree that the cover for the Narnia book should be removed a some time.
When it comes to importing material from Gutenberg and other sites I would not want to issue a blanket policy to forbid this. This issue has been on my mind since the earliest days of Wikisource. The reading public doesn't really benefit from our copying the efforts of others. Nevertheless, there can be some benefit to a comprehensive treatment of a given author's works. Generally whether to link or copy is a matter of judgement. Eclecticology 12:43, 7 April 2014 (PDT)

The Complete Ian Fleming was not a good idea

I have deleted the page The Complete Ian Fleming for three reasons.

1)The short stories "Octopussy", "The Living Daylights". "The Property of a Lady" and "007 in New York" were not published until after Fleming's death. That means that they are not in the public domain according to Canadian copyright law and should not be hosted here.

2)That page was just too long. I don't think anybody would scroll through it to find a certain novel or short story.

3)Having individual pages about each of Fleming's novels means that I can add the Wikilivres template to the bottom of each of the Wikipedia articles about those books. That should then bring a much, much larger number of readers to this site.

Here's what I suggest you do. Upload the remaining two short stories from the anthology For Your Eyes Only separately. Then upload each chapter of the novels separately. I can then create a contents page for each of those novels with links to all the chapters. It will be a really pretty page with a suitable public domain image from Wikimedia Commons on it. It will be that page that will be linked to from Wikipedia. If that means that the pages you upload would be headed "CHAPTER ONE", "CHAPTER TWO" etc., let me know and I will move them to "Casino Royale/Chapter 1". "Casino Royale/Chapter 2" and so on. I would not leave a redirect behind so that you could then repeat the process for the next novel without any difficulty.

It will be a much slower pocess, obviously, but I think that it will be well worth it in the end. Simon Peter Hughes 03:57, 24 January 2017 (PST)

Hi;

so many things...

1st are you sure about the copyright status of those particular shorts? because the epub'd copyright notice said nothing about any of the stories still being under copyright.

exact & complete quote from the epub; which is the pro'professional

"This title is in the public domain in Canada and is not subject to any license or copyright."

2nd i'm sorry but i am not going to re-upload all of that!

THAT TOOK ME HOURS to do.

& i am not doing it again, much less "chapter by chapter".

i find etexts,

i upload them.

after that i'm done.

i do not have either the time, or the interest to do the formatting, etc. of texts on here.

either you can undelete it, & salvage the contents (in which case i would like to receive credit as the uploader) or you find the text & upload it yourself, or can do without.

to quote a friend of mine "i have done my loving duty by you" & what you do now, is up to you.

which brings me to

3rd from both your action & your comments, it is abundantly clear that you DID NOT READ the messages i left on your talk page,

AND did not EXAMINE the page before you deleted it.

you just thoughtlessly, mindlessly "acted" & erased work THAT TOOK ME HOURS

& left me a nice message, tell me to do it all over again, only in a way that takes even more of my time.

i am NOT pleased about that.

which bring me to

4th

if you had EXAMINED the page before deleting it, among the several things you would have discovered,

one of them is that each story is in a separate "section"

you could have easily created a new page for each story, if that was what you wanted to do.

instead of hitting "delete".

so, bottom line,

you bad decision.

fix it,

live with it,

whatever.

uploading large texts here i s a HUGE pain-in-the-ass anyway,

& for the limited amount of time that i have for doing such things,

i can easily set up my own "PD bookshelf" elsewhere.

& i am sorry if that isn't very collegial & "agf";

but after you ERASED work that i spent HALF A DAY on,

i'm just not feeling it.

bye,

All right. I have undeletd it. Simon Peter Hughes 02:13, 26 January 2017 (PST)

Ian Fleming works

Hi! Could you put the information (about each text published by you), where they come from? The text source (who issued the edition, where and when) is one of the important information about the edition (especially for legal purposes and for literary scholars). After that, some editions may be different from each other. Thank you for your understanding. Electron ツ ➧☎ 16:53, 7 February 2017 (PST)

hi! sorry it took me so long to get back to you about this; i really suck @ "correspondence".
i understand what you are saying, but i'm not sure how much i can help.
all the ian fleming texts (thus far) are taken from an .epub by penguin random house canada; "the complete ian fleming". it seems to be quite recent, in that the copyright notice acknowledges that the works are public domain.
as far as i know, all the texts are "plain vanilla" & bog-standard. the edition makes no claims of "improvements", revisions, or etc. whether that means "exactly as originally, first published, i have no idea.
i'd have just uploaded the original file (like i did with the narnia .pdf, etc.), but it was too big for the size limit here.
i'll add a link to a copy of it (the original .epub), on a blog of mine, here: http://mypublicdomainbookshelf.blogspot.ca/2017/01/ian-fleming.html
